The Three Ways to Make a Document Valid
- Notarization. The Notary Public witnesses your signature, certifies a copy or attests a fact. Used for powers of attorney, certified passport copies, affidavits and company documents. Read more about document notarization.
- Apostille. A Hague Convention certificate that makes a Swedish document valid in more than 120 countries, without further steps. In Sweden, only a Notary Public can issue one. Read more about Apostille.
- Legalization. For countries outside the convention: notarization, then the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, then the destination country’s embassy. We guide you through the chain.
How to Get Your Document Ready for Use Abroad
- Ask the receiving party exactly what they require: an Apostille, a witnessed signature, a certified copy or full legalization.
- Gather your originals. Apostilles are issued on documents with an official stamp and signature; private documents are notarized first.
- Bring a valid ID: passport, Swedish driving licence or SIS-marked ID card. Company signatories also bring a Bolagsverket registration certificate.
- Visit our drop-in in Stockholm (Kungsgatan 37, weekdays 09:00-16:00), or order online or by post if no personal appearance is needed.
- Receive your stamped documents within minutes at the office, or by registered mail.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a document certified in Sweden?
Visit a Notary Public with your original document and a valid ID. At Apostille24 in Stockholm you can use the drop-in service on weekdays 09:00-16:00, or handle most matters by post or online. The Notary Public verifies, certifies and stamps the document, usually within minutes.
What is the difference between notarization, an Apostille and legalization?
Notarization is the Notary Public verifying a signature, copy or fact. An Apostille is a Hague Convention certificate that makes the document valid in over 120 countries. Legalization is the multi-step process via the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and an embassy, used for countries outside the convention.
Do I always need an Apostille for documents used abroad?
No. It depends on the destination country and the receiving party. Hague Convention countries normally require an Apostille, EU authorities accept certain public documents without one, and non-convention countries require legalization. Always ask the receiving party first.
Can I get help without visiting Stockholm?
Yes. Apostille matters can be handled entirely by post or online, including the digital e-Apostille, wherever you are in Sweden or abroad. Only services that require identification in person, such as signature witnessing, require a visit.
What does it cost to certify documents?
Apostille24 works with fixed prices per document and service, with no hidden fees. You will find current prices on each service page, and we offer a free consultation if you are unsure what you need.
